Maximizing Your Tweet Audience

Here is my understanding of the reach and behaviour of the various forms of Tweeting. This is based on using Safari to access Twitter via the web.

  • Original tweets
    • Goes to my followers and anyone I @mention, skipping followers if the @mention is first in the Tweet.  (Hence “.@mention”)
    • It is deletable.
  • Responding
    • Is visible to anyone who traces from (i.e., clicks on) the parent tweet, and this could be a lot of people if the parent tweet was posted by someone with a large number of followers.
    • Goes to my followers and anyone I @mention
    • If you put in a link, it will display a blurb in a box
    • Doesn’t embed the parent tweet (good or bad depending on use case)
    • It is deletable.
  • Retweeting
    • Only goes to my followers.
    • Can not @mention
    • It is deletable by going to the original tweet and clicking on retweet to un-retweet.
  • Quote tweeting
    • Goes to my followers and anyone I @mention
    • Shows the parent tweet in a box.  (good or bad depending on use case)
    • It is deletable.
    • If you put in a link it will not display a blurb in a box

Based on these characteristics, it seems that RESPONDING is the best method for Tweeting if you want to get your message out most clearly and to the most people.
